We recently partnered with Dena Alalfey of Transitional Home Build on a set of beautiful Meadows long plates with New York knobs for her home office. The Antique Brass really pops on the black doors, as one can see while they browse the photos. Learn more about Dena and the beautiful home style she shares on @transitional_home_build.
Please give us some more details on Transitional Home Build. How did you develop it, and what sets it apart?
Transitional Home Build was born when I realized I don't have ONE style I'm drawn to. I love mixing modern & traditional in my home, depending on the selection.
During your build, were specific rooms more challenging than others?
The first floor is a big open floor plan. It took a lot of thorough research and design to make each space flow into the next while still giving each its own character.
How did you choose the hardware featured in this project? What attracted you to Nostalgic Warehouse?
My office is a super moody space painted all dark, even the ceilings. The glass doors are black, and they needed a "jewel" that will pop and bring in some character. When I discovered Nostalgic Warehouse's door hardware, I knew that's precisely what my doors needed. It's the first thing your eyes are drawn to against a beautiful dark space.
Did you learn any tips and tricks about door hardware along the way that would be beneficial for others?
You can purchase ones that lock (privacy function) or ones that don't (passage sets). I loved that option.
What is your design style, and how do you incorporate those decorating decisions within your home?
I love modern & traditional design elements mixed in with organic & vintage touches. Every piece in my home has to have a purpose, and I don't buy anything I don't fall in love with. I genuinely believe when designing a space, every piece matters. I purchase large timeless items that have texture and organic features and then style them with pieces that can be easily switched out.
Where do you find design inspiration?
Instagram is the place for design inspo!
When starting a project, how do you organize and plan for it?
I start with the large pieces first, and I love natural, organic, and textured details that add dimension and that early feel. Then I add on to it as I browse my favorite sites.
Many people want to take on large remodeling projects. What are some recommendations for readers who wish to do an extensive remodel project or take on a new build?
- Organize inspirational pictures into categories. This will help you figure out what style you love and what selections you constantly see in the images you save.
- Understand what truly makes a space unique. For example, in a kitchen, you have to consider cabinet style, cabinet type, cabinet height, cabinet colors, island size, drawers vs. cabinets locations, hardware, plumbing fixtures, countertop type, backsplash design, location of outlets, light fixture locations, recessed lights location, floor stain/style, wall color, and so much more!
- Show contractors/builders your inspo pictures to get an accurate budget. Usually, people have a very low budget in mind.
What are some tips for readers who wish to make a small transformation in their home?
Make small changes that create a big impact, like door hardware, light fixtures, and paint! Trust your gut!
