What was your inspiration for this beautiful bedroom update?

My husband and I went to the cutest cocktail bar that was in a boutique hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was saturated with red paint, tiger print carpet velvet sofas, brass details, and dim lighting. I was so inspired and thought to myself, “Why not make our bedroom look like a boutique hotel?” So I got to work designing! I’ll always encourage people to make their home’s aesthetic unique and not worry about future owners. Even with a burgundy bedroom, our house still sold, no problem!

How do you go about sourcing materials?

Most of my sourcing is second-hand. I’m a huge fan of Facebook Marketplace, where I found our headboard, nightstands, and lamps. My search always begins months before starting on the room makeover because you never know when you’ll stumble upon something you’re looking for. To me, that is what makes thrifting so fun! But when it came to hardware, there was no question I'd be sourcing from Nostalgic Warehouse. We used the stunning brass and crystal door knobs in our guest bedroom, so I knew I needed this vintage-inspired hardware for our bedroom as well. It’s the perfect complement to the burgundy paint and the vintage furniture.

What is your favorite part about doing home updates and renovations?

Seeing your vision come to life is one of the best feelings ever. There’s a sense of pride and empowerment knowing you did this. Our environment plays a huge role in our feelings and emotions, so a space designed by you and for you will bring you joy for years to come.

What is your least favorite part about doing home updates and renovations?

Home updates challenge you in many ways. Whether it’s not getting along with your spouse while working on a project, living in the midst of a construction zone, or the inevitable mistakes you weren’t prepared for… it can wear on you. With every project, there is always a lesson learned. It’s worth it, though.

What is the highlight of this update?

For me, it’s the ceiling. Never in a million years did I think I'd be able to build a coffered ceiling. I’m so proud of how it turned out because it makes the room feel grand and luxurious.

How has your style evolved over the years?

My style has evolved drastically over the years. As a first-time homeowner, my style started as modern bohemian. Honestly, I think it was just because Bohemian was trendy, which confused me into believing it was my style. Everyone experiences style evolution… It's just part of the process. It takes time to learn what you truly love. I now love the bold use of color, vintage pieces, traditional trim work, and an overall timeless design. I’d say I have more of an eclectic design style, but I do think I'm still evolving.

What have been some of the highlights of your home projects so far?

The most important thing to me, as a content creator, is writing detailed tutorials for all of my home projects. This way, someone else who is a beginner can feel confident tackling the same project. It’s truly a highlight for me anytime I get a message from someone thanking me for my tutorial. I know how rewarding it feels to complete a project, and I love that they get to experience that feeling as well.

What have been some of the biggest challenges so far?

Aside from the frustrating DIY mistakes that always happen, the design process itself can also be very challenging. I’m big on being very intentional and not rushing to make decisions. Between choosing the right paint color, sourcing items that complement each other, and also being on a budget…it takes a lot of time and thought!

What are your favorite types of projects to work on?

Any kind of millwork is my absolute favorite kind of project! It’s a guaranteed way to add character to a space, and I always feel so proud of myself after. With every trim work project, my skills get better and better. It can be intimidating, for sure, but you have to start somewhere!

What is your current favorite room in your home and why?

My favorite room is our bedroom. It is just my favorite place to be. It is cozy yet elegant and romantic. I poured my heart into that room, and it will always hold a special place in my heart!

Is there anything else you would like to share?

We just moved into a beautiful home built in 1930. It had so much character already, but we are beyond excited to add our touch. We’re fortunate that we already have original door knobs, but we will be sourcing other vintage-inspired hardware from Nostalgic Warehouse.
