Take one look at Mal Robison's Hydrangea Blues Instagram page, and you'll immediately see her timeless, traditional aesthetic. With love for the French colonial look, Mal incorporates classic and conservative aspects in her interiors, along with little modern touches. She doesn't really follow the “trends” when it comes to her home, and her love for all things grand millennial will always trump a trendy, modern, minimalistic space.
Mal's current home is a new build, and the most challenging rooms to design were the kitchen and the primary bedroom. During the building process, one big challenge she ran into was waiting on people to add the final touches, such as wallpaper and carpentry. She tends to pick one item to base her plan on when starting a project, and she then gets the “need to have” items and adds the “little things” as she goes.
Mal incorporated our Mission long plate with Crystal knobs throughout her home and felt they completely transformed it by adding timeless charm. She envisions this door hardware as something that will be in the house forever and notes, “Everything that Nostalgic Warehouse touches are just magic. I need their products everywhere!”
Mal found the hardware installation process pretty self-explanatory and not overly complicated. She does recommend making sure your door is completely customized to your handles.
Another recommendation Mal has for readers who want to do an extensive remodel project in their home is to be patient and not settle just to “get it done.” Time is money – make sure you put into your space what you imagined.
As far as minor home updates, transforming an entryway is something Mal is very passionate about. The entryway tells the story, and it sets the tone of the rest of the home. She recommends a pretty floor and warm furnishings such as an entryway rug. Lighting, such as a stunning chandelier, is also crucial, no matter what size the space is. She also thinks molding helps warm up any room.
Mal finished interior design school last spring and moved into her family’s current home in the summer. She is slowly but surely putting everything together and using this home as her portfolio. Because Mal is going for a very specific look, she is taking her time finishing the home. She believes in intentional buying and keeping a room completely untouched and empty rather than putting something there just to fill space. She plans to have the downstairs fully furnished, molded, and painted by spring and the upstairs done by next fall.
